This week’s Napa Valley arts picks

silos_logoNov. 25: Thanksgiving week kicks off Upvalley with a musicians’ open-microphone night at Calistoga Restaurant and Brewery on Lincoln Avenue. Amateurs and professionals alike are welcome to perform from 8:30 p.m. till midnight; (707) 942-4101, www.calistogainn.com. In downtown Napa–where three miles of white lights are twinkling along building roof lines, the First and Third street bridges, and the Riverwalk–you can watch Mayor Jill Techel and Congressman Mike Thompson light a 29-foot tall Christmas tree in Veterans Park, with live entertainment PLUS free cookies and hot chocolate from 6 to 7 p.m. At 6:30, Philip Smith and his all-singing Gentlemen of Jazz play and harmonize at Uva Trattoria till 9:30 p.m. (1040 Clinton St., (707) 255-6646, reservations advised); 7:30 is show time for vocalist Suzi Gilbert and jazz pianist Mike Greensill at Silo’s Jazz Club, till 9 p.m.: $20, Napa River Inn, www.silosjazzclub.com, (707) 251-5833.

Napa Valley Arts Week Nov. 18 – Nov. 24

turandotNov. 18: Spend a night at the Metropolitan Opera without leaving the Napa Valley, with Cinedome 8’s presentation of  “Turandot.” Franco Zeffirelli directs the famous Puccini opera, with Maria Guleghina as the ruthless Chinese princess of the title, whose hatred of men is so strong that she has all her suitors beheaded when they can’t solve her riddles. Marcello Giordani sings Calaf, the unknown prince who eventually wins her love and whose solos include the famous “Nessun Dorma.” 6:30 p.m., 825 Pearl St., Napa; $22.

Napa Valley Arts Week Nov. 5 – Nov. 10

steve_lgNov. 5: Comedian, actor, playwright and novelist Steve Martin is also a bluegrass banjo player and songwriter whose new CD, The Crow:  New Songs for the Five-String Banjo, currently sits at the top of the Billboard Bluegrass Album Chart. Martin appears at the Napa Valley Opera House with his group the Steep Canyon Rangers tonight at 8 p.m.; $100/$125/$135, www.nvoh.org. Coincidentally, Martin’s acclaimed play Picasso at the Lapin Agile opens tomorrow at the Napa Valley College Theater: see listing for Nov. 8.

The Art of Downtown Napa

The many active studio artists in Napa are adding to the mix with their annual Open Studios self-guided tour organized by Arts Council Napa Valley.
