Napa Valley Arts Week: Feb. 15 through Feb. 21, 2010

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

As many of you know, I’ve been sojourning in Seattle over the winter, an experience that’s affirmed my gratitude for Napa’s benevolent climate. The Emerald City makes up for its wet-weather season by fostering the arts all year round–but guess what? Napa is well on its way to having BOTH the climate AND the full-spectrum arts scene. Read on for my picks over the next seven days, and find more choices at www.nvarts.org.

Napa Valley Arts Week: Louisa’s picks for January 25 – 31, 2010

Monday, January 25th, 2010

The-Little-Tramp-charlie-chaplin-85240_250_338Start your week with a Chaplin masterpiece, celebrate the 130th anniversary of a local landmark, rock out to help raise money for Haiti relief — pace yourself, there’s a lot to do in Napa County! You can find complete listings online in the Master Arts and Culture Calendar, brought to you by Arts Council Napa Valley at www.nvarts.org:

Jan. 25: The St. Helena Public Library presents the classic silent comedy “The Little Tramp,” in which Charlie Chaplin battles it out with technology, unemployment, jail and demanding customers. Known as Chaplin’s last silent film, this film is anything but—from the opening notes of the rich score (composed by Chaplin himself) to the first and last time the star’s voice is heard on screen. The film was deemed “culturally significant” by the Library of Congress in 1989 and selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. 7 p.m., free: 1492 Library Lane, St. Helena, (707) 963-5244.

Not only is there plenty to choose from among the valley’s arts events this week, but many of the options are free as the breeze. Here are a few of my selections –find complete listings online at www.nvarts.org.

Jan. 4: There’s always something to do on Monday evenings, thanks to the St. Helena Public Library’s weekly free film screenings. Over the past few months, the library’s adventurous programming has brought us movies about witchcraft, under-the-radar foreign films, and adaptations of novels by Truman Capote and Nelle Harper Lee. The library starts 2010 with silent films from the last century: Its “Masters of Silent Comedy” series kicks off tonight with Buster Keaton’s masterpiece “The General,” (1926) which in 2007 was ranked #18 in the American Film Institute’s list of Greatest Movies of All Time. 7 p.m., 1492 Library Lane, St. Helena.
